I’m a linux man with twenty years experience, I like to tweak my wireless routers to make sure they are do extra things like wake on lan for my mythtv, or run custom scripts to monitor my house, or whatever. I’ve used many different linux based WiFi routers within the last 10 years roughly, including WRT54G, to WRT600N, WNDR3800 (those you can hack, but WiFi continues to be not reliable with openwrt for me personally which is a shame for a WiFi router), to the less friendly WNDR4500 (powerful when I purchased it, but couldn’t install third party builds on it back then).
I really wanted to like and buy the WRT-1900AC until I saw that linksys mislead us, and it’s only about a season later, that it’s starting to see some open up source support, and it’s not completely working yet. To be reasonable, my WNDR4500 Wifi has been rock solid, but I only use it as a Wifi bridge, not as a router even, and run nothing at all on it since the stock firmware won’t let me run what I need.
I’m not heading to review on the Wifi aspects of the RT-AC3200, other reviews have done this and truthfully the Nighthawk X6 and RT-AC3200 will be fairly close given that they use the same chipset. Note that most bad reviews are from people with basic Wifi issues and set up problems that can happen with all WiFi routers.
The Asus however offers smartconnect aka band steering, the choice of moving your WiFi clients automatically from 5Ghz #1 (high band, more speed, less range), 5Ghz #2 (low 5Ghz band, a bit less speed, a bit more range), and 2Ghz (less rate but a lot more range).
The Nighthawk only works with handoff between its two 5Ghz bands. By Apr 2015 still causes problems for most Smartconnect, and most transform it off for now, but 1) it will get better which means you can turn it on later, 2) if you don’t mind tweaking, it can be made to work for you depending on your clients likely. Google for “rt ac3200 smart connect lacking manual” to hopefully get 5Ghz->2Ghz handoff working out for you.
Gleam reported problem of frequent disconnects on the Asus (hourly). This is credited to a WPA key rotation option you can change on and doesn’t work well with some clients. Don’t use it, and you should be fine.
Now, let’s get to open source. However, you might not value helping the company that does a better job assisting the starts source community all those products are actually predicated on, Asus offers you a router you can install your own 3rd party linux programs on. If you are hands on and/or know linux, you likely quite definitely care about this.
This is my first router which supports open source from the box, you can include your own software trivially and do not have to hold back a year or even more for an operating open source build of dd-wrt or openwrt, with only half working wireless due to binary driver problems sometimes.
Again, for assessment, my linksys WNDR4500 will still only be getting dd-wrt after 2 years now, and I’m a bit cautious with how that will come out (after much too long of no real working open source support). Another example was the linksys WRT-1900AC, supposed to be the ultimate hacker router. It works together with openwrt twelve months later hardly, with manual work, and it’s really not stable yet.
Asus RT-AC3200: unpacked it, fired up sshd, ready to add third party open up source software. Asuswrt is already great, it’s predicated on tomato-usb (open up source router platform) and out of the the package you can install 3rd party linux software (perl, whatever) with Entware. I’m pleased I provided my money to Asus just for that. Google Entware asuswrt-merlin for details on this.
Then there’s a builder who makes the asuswrt-merlin build: you get a few extra features on the base router too while keeping working wireless. It’s so excellent out of the box that I’ve you don’t need to install openwrt onto it should it exist later.
So this router exceeded my anticipations. Thank you Asus.
Minuses up to now:
– $300 is obviously a steep price, but it’s market rate for the present time
– Asus support is meant to be good on the telephone, but I Emailed firstname.lastname@example.org on a mon early morning. Heard nothing at all 24H later.

First i would like to start by saying i love this router absolutely. Its WIFI range is fantastic, its dual band so i have choices and i could set up a visitor network with the click of my mouse. They have a friendly Interface which allows everyday users to make changes as they see fit. In addition, it permits press prioritization simply by dragging your personal computer, or any device to the very best of the list or even to another list. This will ensure that no matter how many devices are connected your selected device will always get what bandwidth it requires.
The IMPORTANT part Now.
Some people including myself have discovered that the rate coming out of the router to the devices was not as advertised from my Cable company. Directly from the Modem i received 100 MB down however the moment i used the router i was getting only 30. I even used the Built in speed test app in the router. After hours of hunting for the nagging problem i found out the culprit. The router comes pre designed to Cap the at 30 MB.
HAVE NO FEAR, the perfect solution is is simple.
1: Log in to you router at 192.168.1.1 (assuming you didn’t change it.)
2: Click on the media prioritization tabs on the remaining.
3: Click setting (see attached picture)
4: Change the quantity. to whatever your maximum limit is. 0 may be unlimited though i’ve not attempted this i just raised mine from 30000 to 120000
Enjoy the router!
This wireless router, besides supporting Linux firmware, is a tested and true wireless router with 802.11 b and g support. It works with WPA, WPA2 and the old WEP encryption plans. In addition, they have a built-in firewall, MAC address filtering, and supports access plans (such as “do not let FTP connections to the computer on Sundays”).
WHILE I installed this wireless router, setup was very straightforward (I did so not use the Setup Wizard because it didn’t work for me personally). I transformed the Ip range (because the DSL modem uses the 192.168.1 address space), established the administrator password, chose a name for the Wireless network, enabled WPA2 encryption and picked a passphrase.
After that, I linked my laptop to the router immediately, and received an excellent signal and throughput of 100 KB/sec (for comparison, my DSL connection maintains a throughput of 300 KB/sec while i connect straight to the DSL modem).
I am using the router for many months now, and also have not got any dropped connections (my older Netgear router fell connections fairly frequently and didn’t support the newer WPA encryption structure) and have consistent throughput. The router has been operating constantly for these past few months.
For the real tech-heads, this router has customized Linux firmware available from third parties. I haven’t attempted this firmware, because the base Linksys firmware more than fits my needs.
Finally, good security practices are to: Change the administrator password, disable Universal Plug and Play, disable Remote administrative access, use a distinctive name for the access point, and if the network is only for a little amount of personal devices (i.e. a laptop you own), enable MAC address filtering. A MAC address uniquely identifies a network card, so this only allows certain computers to access the network.

Signal strength is *much* higher on the 2nd floor of our home now, in the most remote room, than with my tri-antenna TrendNET router, despite having an added dish reflector behind it (an impromptu measure that had helped the TrendNET’s signal). The pronounced signal improvement with the TP-LINK Archer C9 is probably due to its beam-forming technology and is the principal reason I chosen the C9. Before doing so I’d attempted several models of range extenders, without fortune. If you have marginal transmission in a few right parts of your office or home, the TP-LINK Archer C9 might be the answer for you. And, as a bonus, it’s an extremely attractive little bit of gear.
I did plenty of research in my search for the perfect replacement for my obsolete router. I chose that one and I have been extremely pleased with it. My router is in my bedroom and I stream Sling, Netflix, etc on multiple televisions throughout the homely house. Since I connected this router up, I have experienced zero buffering, zero problems, zero annoyance with internet connectivity. I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend this router extremely.
Awesome router. I purchased my first router without doing much research and ended up just getting an N type router. I had developed no basic idea the actual meant and my wife was always complaining about the internet speed. I have a desktop and use a LAN line therefore i never really had issues. Well after some looking into I came across that my router was really unable of wifi rates of speed bast 6 or 7 Mbps. My bad. I did so some research and decided to go with this mid tier router and man I am pleased with it. They have a 2.4 GHz band and 5 GHz band. Which is awesome because the computer printer can be placed by us and other small devices like that on the two 2. 4 and keep the 5 open for tablets and laptop computers. There is even a visitor network for the pesky in-laws who suck up all of your bandwidth. Or those friends you just don’t quite like enough. Just kidding!
But really this is a superb router. I very please and have recommended to multiple friends who enjoy it also. Oh and my wife’s download rate proceeded to go from ~6 to 80 Mbps with only the router change.
Really like this router and waited a couple weeks to provide review since these tend to develop issues after a day or so. This router is very stable and very fast. It’s compatable with my old devices and lab tests on AC compatable devices in my own home offers 120mps download via speedtest on my 100mb service from Cox. Not bad at all. I have a 500gb old spinner drive attached via USB 3.0 slot on the router and gain access to time and performance loading from it are excellent. TP-Link continues to aid the router with a firmware update last week. The NAT Increase feature should be enabled to get the most swiftness from the C9. Turning it off will provide you with additional features but less velocity. It’s up to you.
I’ve battled with every router I’ve owned including multiple Linksys and Belkin version. There is always some security or connectivity concern with one or more of my devices. NO issues have been experienced by me with the C9
I purchased both the TP-Link AC1750 Archer C7 & AC1900 Archer C9. Both routers are excellent but I decided on the C9. From my experience the distance on the C9 is preferable to the C7. The C7 did reach every certain area of my house and property but I found a stronger signal on both 2.4GHz & 5GHz signals with the C9 in the same areas. The 5GHz signal on the C9 reached further. I am in a 4000sqft house and 1/2 acre property. Every inch is reached with the C9 router of my house and every acre of my property. Going through 4 walls and upstairs I get 3 bars of connection in my own master bathroom. My previous setup of experiencing 2 routers on each final end of my home only produce 2 bars. In the furthest end of my property collection I am getting 3 bars of connection where as my previous set up cannot reach beyond my patio.
Create is very simple. Having the router for nearly 1 month I have not had to reset in any way. Initially my older laptop linked but cannot get an online signal. I had formed to make an adjustment to the laptop’s wireless card environment. So if anyone is having an association problem try the next –
1. Got Network & Internet Settings
2. Head to Change Adapter Options
3. Find your wireless connection (can be wired connection too) and right click on it
4. Click on Properties
5. Search for Internet Process Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and solitary select it, this will showcase it and allow access to the Properties tab
6. Click Properties tabs and make sure both Obtain an Ip automatically & Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
My DNS server address property had not been was and preferred place to a specific address. Once I changed it to the selection I was immediately linked and have not been disconnected automatically. The C9 is the best router I have owned followed by the C7.
